A glimpse on the programme
The three-day conference will feature three distinguished keynote speakers: Professor Nobuto Yamamoto, the host of RIPE@2014, will critically review the surge and challenges faced by public service media in Asia since the 2014 conference. Professor Terry Flew will draw on his extensive experience observing and participating in the transformation of Asia-Pacific broadcasting to provide knowledge and insights about current conditions and future trends. Mr. Maraos, who chaired one of the pioneering indigenous TV services funded by the public in Taiwan, will share firsthand experience in the leadership and management of this unique PSM model.
TaiwanPlus Special Session: PSM in Asia, the Regional Context
On the first day, the session titled “TaiwanPlus Special Session: PSM in Asia, the Regional Context” will explore the international communication experiences of public service media organizations across Asia.
The forum will feature six distinguished panelists:
· Aoki Yoshiyuki: Editor-in-Chief, NHK World-Japan (Japan)
· Da-mi Kim: Chief Anchor, Arirang (South Korea)
· Joana Paula “Jaypee” Victoriano: Special Projects Coordinator, People’s Television Network (Philippines)
· Mamta Verma: Director General of DD News, Doordarshan (India)
· Nadia Tsao: Deputy CEO and Editor-in-Chief, TaiwanPlus (Taiwan)
· Wang Yin: Vice President of AI Strategy & Solutions, Mediacorp (Singapore)
NHK World-Japan is one of the leading international public news channels, especially recognized for its accuracy and timely support following the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Arirang, innovated as a national tourism service, represents a state-of-the-art software power of state broadcasting. PTN as a long-term struggle for autonomy and mission, serves as a living example of establishing a new independent country’s national development remit after the war. Located in the South, DD functions as the public service arm for the Third and Non-Aligned World, leveraging satellite technology to extend its reach. Championed for its modernization and diverse identities, MediaCorp manages one of the most highly acclaimed international news channels, a status recently affirmed by global diplomatic recognition. Finally, Taiwan PTS, an emerging international public service channel navigating complex geopolitics and national public image, has successfully rejuvenated this country’s international broadcasting after two decades of requests and advocacy.
Drawing on their respective national experiences, the panelists will engage in an in-depth discussion of the opportunities and challenges facing international communication and global outreach in the public media sector.
Areas and issues of inquiry include media independence, geopolitical change, digital transformation, public trust, institutional legitimacy, and models for sustainability, as well as significant implications of disinformation, propaganda, and platform governance in the online media ecology.
By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and comparative perspectives, the RIPE@2026 Conference will build on the achievements accomplished by the RIPE initiative since the first biennial conference in Finland in 2002, contributing new perspectives and facilitating broadening participation in Asia and beyond. The conference seeks to support the international community of PSM experts working to advance theoretical frameworks and empirical research to cultivate deeper, richer understandings of public service media in our complex and rapidly shifting global media context.
