We already know the winners of this year’s Media and Democracy Karol Jakubowicz Award! The book “Datafication of Public Opinion and the Public Sphere: How Extraction Replaced Expression of Opinion<\/strong>” (2022), by\u00a0Prof. Slavko Splichal<\/strong>\u00a0(University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) was awarded this edition’s award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Selection Committee evaluated all of the submitted publications according to three interwoven criteria: methodological correctness, contribution to media knowledge, and potential impact on democratic society. Splichal’s book was granted the award for its “high potential to contribute to media and democracy<\/strong>, as the societal contexts of algorithms and data become crucial to understanding the power of high technologies in shaping public discourse and fostering democratic deliberations”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special Media and Democracy\u00a0Karol Jakubowicz Award 2023 was awarded to\u00a0Jolanta Kurska<\/strong>\u00a0for her book\u00a0Wieczny powr\u00f3t Dreyfusa<\/em>\u00a0(Dreyfus: A Perpetual Comeback<\/strong>), “for raising awareness about where the sources of polarization in society lie and as a warning sign that the Dreyfus Affair is universal”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
